Bhreagh + Ian | Our Love Story

Tell us how you first met? B:We first met at the Doryman Pub in Cheticamp. Ian was the fiddler at the Doryman that afternoon. I had never heard him play before and fell in love with his music immediately. I: I first saw her at the Doryman when I was playing. I kept asking my guitar player “Who is that redhead?”. B: I thought I kept catching him looking at me but wasn’t sure if it was me or someone else. After the music, I bought his cd. He was so shy. I: I was scared to death to talk to her but glad I did.

Two weeks after Celtic Colours, Ian was returning to Calgary and I had to go to a conference. He took me to a celtic concert out there and we’ve been talking every day since.

When did you know he/she was the one? B: I’m a science-y person and didn’t necessarily believe in ‘love at first sight’ but was surprised to find that ‘love at first listen’ does exist. I came home from the Doryman and told my Mom, “I’m telling you right now, I’m going to marry him” I: I just knew.

Tell us about the proposal. B:I had a suspicion that it might be coming, but had no idea when. I like to be in control of things and kept hinting at possible ideas, horseback riding, sunset, picnic, beach, etc. I knew I had made the right choice in choosing my future husband when he picked a place that exceeded all of my expectations. He knows how much I look up to my grandparent’s marriage and how important to me they are. I have told him that, Harriett and Robert (my grandparents) are the most amazing example of true love. He proposed to me on Christmas Eve in their driveway after an awesome evening with them. Perfection.

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. B: Truthfully, everything. But, most I would have to say, how honest and simple he makes my life. I: see above.

Share with us something silly or quirky the other person does. B: Ian writes ‘IMD’ on about everything he owns

Besides getting married, what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day? Wearing my dress, my flower crown, and seeing my handsome guy in a kilt. I: Having everyone who is close to us there to celebrate with us, and seeing her walking down the aisle in her dress.

What’s your favorite trend for weddings right now? B: Country, rustic, simple, meaningful

What inspired your décor or theme? B: Our favorite things: Scottish heritage, country-living, Cape Breton

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why? B: I tried to make every detail special and meaningful to us. Some of my favorites are, my MacDougall tartan belt, walking down the aisle to Ian’s music, our claddagh themed wedding favors.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning? B: Can’t think of anything. I would advise future brides to do lots of research and look at a lot of photos to find their favorite themes.

Maria & Mark| Our Story

Tell us how you first met. Maria: Mark and I met through mutual friends while out one night dancing. I was attracted to him because he was dancing with absolutely no inhibition!

When did you know he/she was the one? Maria: I can’t really pin point it. It grew with our relationship. He was the first person outside of my family that could talk me through stressful times and really make me feel better.

Tell us about the proposal. Maria: He and his son performed and choreographed dance routine! It was the perfect proposal for me. They danced in unison at first, Justin did his solo and left the room, Mark did his solo and clapped twice and a little black box flew through the air. Mark caught it and opened it up and asked me to marry him! I couldn’t breathe! I was freaking out!! Justin was jumping up and down yelling “we are getting married!!” over and over and Mark was looking at me saying, “Are you saying yes?!?” I said yes, obviously.

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. Maria: I love Mark most of all because he is knows exactly what to say when I am feeling nervous or upset and he is always very kind to everyone.

If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does. Maria: I think I am the quirkier one, is really good to take his coffee mug out to the kitchen every morning but for some reason he ALWAYS leaves the spoon he used to stir his coffee behind!

Besides getting married –‐ what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day? Maria: Dancing!

What’s your favorite trend for weddings right now? Maria: like the style of pictures now, they are more real and less posed.

What inspired your décor or theme? Maria: I am a Balboa swing dancer, a style of dance that started in the 20’s! I love vintage style.

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why? Maria: They are numerous, from the location to small details in my outfit, we are putting a lot of memory to family members who have passed away.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning? Maria: That I could hire a wedding planner for just the day of. I was maid of honor yesterday in my friend’s wedding and it was very aggravating the amount of things she had to think of the day of.

Amanda & Andrew | Our Story

Tell us how you first met? We met on July 15, 2012. It was a hot sunny day and we were both sitting on the patio at our local pub. Andrew came over to introduce himself (after a few beers of liquid courage)and asked for my phone number.

When did you know he/she was the one? I knew immediately when he introduced himself that I was going to fall for him. On our first date, we both knew that we were perfect for each other. We were like ‘two peas in a pod’ and instant best friends.

Tell us about the proposal. Andrew proposed on April 27, 2013 at the lighthouse in Airsaig Nova Scotia. We spent a lot of time there our first summer together as we both love the ocean. He says he was not that nervous because he was pretty confident I would say yes. We had been talking about it for a while and both wanted to get married, so I was very excited when he got down on one knee and asked. I was so happy I could not stop smiling!

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. Andrew says he loves how kind I am. I love how easy-going and loving he is.

If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does. We both love that we do not take things too seriously and can laugh at ourselves. We both joke that our maturity level peaked at age 15.

Besides getting married –‐ what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day? Seeing each other for the first time just before the ceremony.

What’s your favorite trend for weddings right now? Rustic/classic

What inspired your décor or theme? Nature, the ocean, countryside

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why? Our name carved in a heart on a tree stump (part of our decorations)…Andrew built me a table for work and carved our initials in a heart on it so that I can look at it every day.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning? How much work is involved!!

Sarah & Cory| Our Story

Tell us how you first met? It all began April 19th 2010 at a garage party at Molly and Christians home in Hubley. We chatted all night. Then when I went to leave Cory chased me down the driveway, then gave me his number and kissed me on the cheek.

When did you know he/she was the one? S: I knew Cory was the one for me the moment I kissed him it felt so right, also the way he made me feel he treated me like a princess, he has always been so good to me. We also share so many interests biking, skiing, partying and drinking!!! It was like I met my twin in guy form. C: I knew Sarah was the one for me the second she pulled into the garage party she drove a jeep, and had a motorcycle and dirt bike. We had lots in common and being with Sarah was so easy going we always had a good time together.

Tell us about the proposal. I didn’t know it was coming at all, we decided to wait a year or so until we had more money as we just had a baby may 20,2012 and he proposed Aug 5,2012. I was so surprised. We were at a wedding in PEI that weekend,( Yvon and Kendra’s wedding). On the way back to Halifax we were crossing the confederation bridge, with our daughter Brooklyn in the backseat. Half way across the bridge I noticed Cory playing with the ring I had on my middle finger on my ring hand, when he said, “Would you throw that ring over the bridge if I gave you another one?” I said of course. Then he pulled the ring from under the seat and asked me to marry him, while still driving!!! I felt so excited and happy, it was the best day of my life. I had many tears of joy!!! I was very shocked. I couldn’t stop looking at the ring, it was beautiful. I couldn’t believe I was so lucky that I was going to marry the man of my dreams

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. S: I love that Cory is easy going and has a great sense of humor. I can count on him for anything. C: Sarah is very caring, I love that she is always herself and loves to have fun. We share the same interests which makes being together so easy. We share a special connection. We smile a lot when we are together.

Besides getting married –‐ what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day? Spending our lives together. Sharing our special day with all our friends and family that we love so very much! Having a huge party to celebrate this great day.

What’s your favorite trend for weddings right now? Photo booths. Lots of candles to set a romantic feeling. We went with fresh flowers Gerber daisies to add color. Lots of shine and bling.

What inspired your décor or theme? Romantic and simple. I love bling, so we went with a blingy theme – black/white damask and pink. We wanted something simple and classy.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning? How hard it would be to plan from Halifax. I always wanted a Cape Breton wedding on the water. We were very lucky to have so many people to help us with the planning so everything worked out great.

Pam & Greg| Our Story

Tell us how you first met? We met through online dating, something neither of us thought we would ever do! I (Pam) had pretty much decided online dating wasn’t for me, as had Greg, (and as it turns out we were both thinking of cancelling our accounts) when Greg found my profile online and decided to contact me. He seemed interesting enough and we had some things in common so we spent a few days exchanging messages then decided to meet in person. Out first meeting was at The Shoe Shop in Halifax over drinks and cheesecake. Our first real date happen over a month later!

When did you know he/she was the one? Our relationship was slow to blossom. We both had the mindset that it wouldn’t work out based on previous online dating experiences. Thankfully we still decided to give it a chance because it turns out we were both wrong! We started out as friends, but as we spent more time together, we each discovered that the other person possessed the qualities we were looking for in a life-long partner. We really bonded over cooking and a shared love of good food! After meeting each other’s family and friends and getting to know more about each other’s past and upbringing, we knew it was meant to be.

Tell us about the proposal. Greg told me about a year in advance that we would be engaged in 2012, he just wouldn’t say when. During this time he was saving up to buy me the perfect ring (after getting ideas/suggestions from my girlfriends). Greg had originally planned a romantic weekend in Margaree, but his plan fell through when our weekend away had to be cancelled. Instead, we were having a quiet evening at home talking, sipping wine, and listening to music. We were talking about us and how amazing it was that we stayed together after such an uncertain start to our relationship. With that in mind, Greg went upstairs to look for something and l decided to go refill the toilet paper in the bathrooms. I met Greg on the stairwell with my arms full of toilet paper. He just wasn’t acting himself and seemed very nervous. He was partially hidden behind the wall on the landing when I heard something shut (which it turns out was the ring box that he was shoving back in his pocket). When I asked him what he was doing and what the sound was, he said “I just farted. Can’t you smell it?” I knew he was up to something but continued on my way to the bathrooms anyway. After I finished, I came back to the living room where Greg was still standing around seeming very antsy. At that point he said he couldn’t wait anymore and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. In the process of opening the ring box he used a bit too much force and actually snapped off the hinge! In the end, after I asked him if he was for real, I said yes.

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. Greg: Pam’s ability to care for others. Pam: Greg’s passion and excitement for the things he loves.

If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does. Greg: Pam has a habit of playing with her top lip when she’s tired or stressed. Pam: Greg has an immense love for cows and all things cow-related. He’ll even “moo” when he sees one!

Besides getting married –‐ what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day? We are both looking forward to having all our family and friends together to celebrate with us and all the memorable moments the day will bring. Greg is especially looking forward to seeing Pam in her wedding dress for the first time.

What inspired your décor or theme? We wanted to choose colors that were different from most other weddings. For us, using pewter grey with hot pink accents as our color scheme was classy and fun. Our goal is for a decor that is pleasing to the eye, but not overdone.

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why? The whole day will be special because it will be spend with our families and friends! But I will also be carrying my paternal grandmother’s wedding band with me that day (likely pinned inside my dress) as we were always extremely close.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning? Just how many last minute details there are to take care of in the final 1-2 weeks leading up to your wedding day. It can be a bit overwhelming!

Chyloe & J | Our Story

Tell us how you first met? We first met at Ranchman’s, a country bar in Calgary, AB.  I ignored J’s first request to dance because I didn’t see him! I was going to tell a friend on the dance floor I was leaving and I walked right by him. As I was coming back, he got my attention and I accepted his offer to dance with me. Then as he so kindly walked me to my truck, I fell in a pot hole and grabbed onto J to save myself. So I guess you could say I literally fell for him.

When did you know he/she was the one? About four months into our long distance relationship, I truly knew he was the one for me.

Tell us about the proposal.  The proposal was very nice and very much a surprise! I even gave him heck for getting someone to watch our son again! lol Little did I know! We drove to Banff, AB and in the middle of our three hour trail ride we got of our horses horses for a rest, he got on one knee and then I knew. I started to cry and said, “really?” I said yes, we took pictures and continued our ride it was beautiful!

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. C: I love the way J looks at me, no one else looks at me like he does and he’s my best friend.  J: I love the way Chyloe looks- she’s hot! I love her personality, she is so kind and giving. Chyloe is also my best friend.

If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does.
J and I both have what we like to call “weird connections”. We don’t eat the part of the burger or sub that our fingers touch, we also call spaghetti, sgetti! Sometime we also communicate with bodily functions.

Besides getting married –‐ what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day? A great time with friends and family!

What inspired your décor or theme? Our fall theme was inspired by our love for that time of year. We also incorporated cowboy hats and Cape Breton tartan to bring our backgrounds into it.

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why? Yes we have a blue rose incorporated into our flower girls kissing ball to represent J’s grandmother Lynn. It was her favorite flower.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning? That you need to save for 2 years not just 1, weddings are dang expensive.

Taryn & Brian | Our Story

Tell us how you first met? We first met on New Years Eve – he lived in Alberta at the time (home visiting) and I had just booked a flight to move there. He came to visit me in Calgary my first weekend there (3 weeks later) and the rest was history!

When did you know he/she was the one? How quickly we became comfortable with one another. I think it was around the 2nd or 3rd weekend we spent together.. (cheesy but true).

Tell us about the proposal. He took me to Lake Louise the following New Years after we met. He sat me down at the “ice castle” thrown. All I remember saying and thinking is “Jesus it’s cold, why are you getting me to sit on ice?” I then noticed how shaky his voice became. He then got down on one knee and popped the question.

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. How easy it is to have fun when we’re together – whether it be sitting home watching a movie or out on the town. We know how to bring the best out in each other.

Where do you see yourselves in 20 years?
Happily married with some teenagers kicking around hopefully!

Besides getting married –‐ what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day? Being surrounded by love – families, friends, etc.

What’s your favorite trend for weddings right now?
Comfortable and personal

What inspired your décor or theme?
Our personalities

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why?

Everything! Getting married in my parent’s yard was key. Even if there was a hurricane!

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning? Any tips or advice for other couples planning their wedding. Stay cool. It always works out in the end. Never lose touch of the big picture. Don’t worry be happy! I could go on forever.

Carlene & Jerron| Our Story

Tell us how you first met?  C: I worked at Subway in Antigonish while in university, and always remember Jerron coming in. I heard from his conversations he had with other customers that he was working out West and was home on his days off. I always appreciated how polite he was, even when I messed up his sub once. I had a boyfriend at the time, so I never even entertained the thought of making anything more than his sandwich of it! I moved to Halifax in May when I finished at X, and a couple of girlfriends came up to go out with me the first weekend I was living there. We went to what seems like every bar in Halifax, and our last stop was Cheers. We were dancing and having a great time, when I spotted someone familiar. This guy didn’t know he was familiar to me I bet, but I took it upon myself to strike up conversation (I think it was about what kind of sub he usually ordered, or something along those lines). We danced and carried on, and my girlfriend Steph told me later his name was Jerron, and that one of her friends knew him. Then we were Facebook friends!   J: Carlene and I first unofficially met at subway. She locked eyes on me the moment I walked in and vice versa. It encouraged myself to have subway for lunch pretty much every day I was in Antigonish. Then we randomly met out in Halifax and exchanged numbers.. (she asked for mine first ;)

When did you know he/she was the one? C: Jerron got a call for work in Saskatchewan just a month after we started dating. I was so sad to see him leave, but knew it would work out. When I was driving him to the airport he told me he could see himself marrying me… and I knew then I didn’t want anything more J: It was pretty clear a few months in that her and I were getting serious. The day she said she didn’t mind doing my laundry, struck a bell in my head that she is the one… hahah

Tell us about the proposal.  C: It was the Hawley family reunion in Port Hood. At the end of the weekend, for the final hurrah there was a dinner at the church hall. I noticed Jerron was kind of distant and quiet that whole day, but I just assumed he wasn’t feeling well. He mentioned about an hour before the wedding that I would help him say Grace. I wasn’t very excited about the idea, because I really thought it would just involve me standing beside him as he did his thing. So when it came time at the dinner, I said just get up and do it yourself (haha). But, with one more little push I went to the front of the room to support Jerron ;). He introduced me, as there were family members from away who I had never met. I thought he was trying to engage the kids in the group, by making jokes he mentioned he had a “bag of tricks”. That is the only moment when I thought Oh my goodness, he’s going to propose! And then, he made a chicken noise and pulled out a carton of eggs. Nope… not this time hahah. Then a bundle of bananas, and then he pulled out a ring and I said YES!   J: I had it planned for about a year. The Hawley reunion was planned for the following year and I couldn’t ask for a better way to ask her hand in marriage but in front of 250+ Hawleys… I knew she couldn’t say no!!

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.  C: I love Jerron’s ability to make me laugh… he is so funny and not a bit shy :P   J: This is a tough question. I love everything the MOST about her.

Tell us the one thing he/she does that always makes you laugh.  C: Jerron makes me laugh/embarrassed by stopping random people on the street and asking for directions to the street we’re on… I bury my face until we drive away, then I can laugh.   J: She is clumsy, especially in public.

Where do you see yourselves in 20 years? C: Living closer to home, near the water, with children and a big back yard   J: Settled Close to Port Hood or Neils Harbor on a beach front property!

Besides getting married –‐ what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day? C: Sharing our happiness with our family and friends J: Sharing the day with Family and close friends, I don’t get to see them often anymore living out west so its super exciting to see them all!

Who is most likely to cry on your wedding day?  C: Besides myself? Myself.haha J: Carlene… She cries during most commercials!

Who is most likely to be the last to leave the dance floor?  C: I’ll leave that up to the Hawley boys.   J: Myself, I will be burnin’ rubber off my shoes!

What’s your favorite trend for weddings right now?  C: Fun! They should never be too serious   J: Silly face pictures!!

What inspired your decor or theme?  C: I love rustic, old world charm themes. I always said I should have been born in a different decade.   J: Cape Breton!

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why? C: It’s all special to me… dancing with my father will most definitely fit the bill   J: Everything about the big day has special meaning in its own way.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning?  C: Getting RSVP’s back in time… definitely put the RSVP by date about a month away from the wedding.   J: RSVP for invitations! Get on it early and fast!

Nicole & Jeremy | Our Story

Tell us how you first met?  N: Jeremy and I met in junior high, however we didn’t speak until high school. Jeremy some how got my phone number and started to text me. He would always make comments for me to blow off my plans with my friends to hang out with him because he was “cooler”. Eventually I gave in and let him pick me up from cheer practice one night, and we’ve been together ever since!  J: I seen her in the parking lot at school, and told her brother that I would love to date her one day, 3 years later, I made the magic happen lol

When did you know he/she was the one?  N: Jeremy and I started dating so young that there was and still is a lot of moments that make me think wow I love this guy. However, when he went out west for the first time and came back home for his turn around I just knew he was the one. The way I felt when he was gone and home again, I just knew.  J: I knew she was the one when I first went away for work, she was constantly on my mind and I was worried sick for her, for no reason, just wondering what she was doing, who she was with, where at. I never had those feelings about anyone before, we also took at trip to Mexico a year or 2 before that and had one of the best times of our lives, I think then is when I really seen myself with her for the rest of my life, and actually looked forward to it.

Tell us about the proposal.  N: Jeremy’s proposal caught me completely off guard. I had a feeling it was coming, but I completely was in shock when it happened. It was in Ingonish and the only way to describe it was it was simple, very Jeremy and perfect!  J: After an romantic trip to Moncton (which I think that is when..if ever, she expected it to happen) we came back home to CB to her parents cottage, after a day on the beach and exploring, I took her to a bench overlooking the ocean and the setting sun which was on the property next door and after a struggle to get the ring box out of my pocket I popped the question and she instantly said yes.

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.  N: My favorite thing about Jeremy is that he is my calm. We both live very busy and crazy lives but no matter what he is my “happy place” J: Her strong Independent/outgoing personality.

Tell us the one thing he/she does that always makes you laugh.  N: Jeremy knows how to make me laugh at any point, he is an adorably dorky whenever I need a good laugh!  J: I can’t really narrow it down to one thing to be honest, she just always makes me laugh.

Where do you see yourselves in 20 years?  N: Happily married possibly with a family of our own!  J: Traveling throughout Europe/Asia/south America with our children or without.

Besides getting married –‐ what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day?  N: For me the most exciting thing besides actually getting married is to have every single one of my girls home. It will truly be the best day/ few days surrounding it. I simply can’t wait! J: Having all our family and friends together is just amazing.

Who is most likely to cry on your wedding day?  N: Nicole  J: Kelley Campbell forrrrr sure!

Who is most likely to be the last to leave the dance floor? N: Jeremy lol  J: Normally I would say myself, but I don’t know if that’s going to happen haha so I’m going to have to go with Mike Cote

What’s your favorite trend for weddings right now?  N: Lace and pastels!

What inspired your décor or theme?  N: I love the romantic/elegant feel to a wedding, I love the sleek lines of white and just overall picture everything to be so light and elegant!

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why?  J:Getting married in the same church as my parents is cool

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning? Any tips or advice for other couples planning their wedding.  J: Well I will get the obvious out of the way…Save as much as you can. Other than that, our 2 year engagement I think was the best idea we had, it seems like a long time but it flies by just as quick. Also, book a honeymoon, your lady deserves it. Don’t make plans for later in the year or next year, go after the wedding. So plan a trip, and I mean the man should plan it because let’s face it, the ladies do about 99% of the planning and the last thing they want to take care of is traveling.

Melissa & Gerard| Our Story

Tell us how you first met? M: We met on the school bus but never exchanged much more than a hello. Years later, we connected on Facebook and the rest is history.
G: We first met on the school bus, we really didn’t talk very much. Seven years ago, I added her to my facebook, thought she was hot, so I asked her out.

When did you know he/she was the one? M: I knew I loved him early on, but I knew he was the one when I saw him holding Brody; there’s something about the man you love holding a baby! G: I knew she was the one when we were at a Christmas party (my parents) and she got along with everyone. Family is important to me.

Tell us about the proposal. M: He’s not very subtle, haha. I saw it coming, I was soo ready! But he sure surprised me when he got down on one knee in the middle of the hall in front of my whole family – he’s not one for being the center of attention. G: I was scared $*%!less! I planned over and over but for her, she knew it was coming, I kept dropping hints.

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. M: He’s so modest – he’s amazing and sexy and doesn’t think he is at all. G: I love her blue eyes

Tell us the one thing he/she does that always makes you laugh. M: One thing? He’s always making me laugh, but when he does this little dance, it always makes me smile. G: Every once in awhile she says some smart remark or joke and I love them.

Where do you see yourselves in 20 years? M: Happily married with children ready to graduate. G: Older, kids, bald, haha

Besides getting married –‐ what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day? M: Being surrounded by our loved ones as they witness our marriage. G: CASH!! haha (just kidding)

Who is most likely to cry on your wedding day? M: Me G: Melissa

Who is most likely to be the last to leave the dance floor? M: Me G: Melissa

What’s your favourite trend for weddings right now? M: I love that anything goes now! The old rules went out the window! Haha G: More choices with colors, better music, clothes, etc.

What inspired your décor or theme? M: I love the colors teal and purple and didn’t want it to be to girly for him

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why? M: At the dinner, we set up a table near ours for those loved ones that have passed away, complete with Angel wings – that way it feels like they’re with us. G: The memory table of our loved ones, yeah. And being surrounded by loved ones.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning? Any tips or advice for other couples planning their wedding?
M: Don’t sweat the small stuff! As long as you have a marriage license, an officiant, two witnesses and those you love around you, everything after that is gravy! (don’t get me wrong, you definitely want the gravy and lots of it! Haha) G: Nothing! It was perfect!

Amy + Jim| Our Story

Tell us how you first met? A: We first met working at McDonalds in… 2003 I think it was.. and we knew a lot of the same people etc.. But it wasn’t until 2010, in Calgary, that we actually got together. I’m not going to go too much into detail but we fell for each other pretty fast. J: The first time I saw Amy was when I was 16 years old. I was working at McDonalds. There was just something about her I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Fast forward 8 years and we end up meeting again in Calgary at Papi & Icas house. I knew this time I was not letting her go. One night everything just fell into place, everyone else was gone to bed and we stayed out by the fire. It started raining and “Have I Told You Lately” by Rod Stewart came on the radio. We got up n danced there in the rain by the fire.

When did you know he/she was the one? A: I just loved him. There was no one in particular thing, no “wow” moment that made me think he was the right one. I just knew. Right from the start there was something there that was different. Meant to be I suppose. J: I knew Amy was the one that night we danced in the rain together. Knew this was the women I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.

Tell us about the proposal. A: Well He asked me during the day, while he was at work, If I wanted to have a fire in the back yard that night..Nothing unusual there because we had fires all the time. So when he got home we took the computer outside for music.. I usually played the radio but he had mentioned that he didn’t want the radio since he had been listening to it all day. We were out by the fire, the baby was asleep and I just laid him in his stroller. Jim was picking out a song on the computer for us to listen to and he picked “have I told you lately that I love you” (the first song we had ever danced to.. by the fire one night.. in the rain) He got me out of my chair and got down on his knee and proposed. I was completely shocked and the first thing I said was, “Are you kidding?” ha ha It just felt surreal I guess, so obviously I said yes and couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for days.  J: It didn’t take me long to plan the proposal, I knew the timing was right. The first song we ever danced to was playing in the background as we danced by a fire. I told her I feel like I can ask you anything but there is one thing I haven’t asked you, she said what`s that? and then I got down on one knee and proposed. I wasn’t nervous at all, I knew she was the one and was fairly sure she was going to say yes lol

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. A: He has a tough exterior and a soft heart Jim: Her smile. Every time I see her smile I can’t help but smile myself.

Tell us the one thing he/she does that always makes you laugh. J: The little things that she finds funny- which usually aren’t , and just the way she laughs about it makes me smile.

Where do you see yourselves in 20 years? A: Hopefully rich.. but realistically I would say living back in Cape Breton and loving life. J: With any luck, by a fire in Iona down in the field. Dancing, while our wedding song plays in the background.

Besides getting married –‐ what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day? A: I’m looking forward to celebrating the day with family and friends.. Dancing, drinking and having a great evening in beautiful Cape Breton, with people we love. Oh.. And getting to wear my pretty new ring of course ;) J: Good times with great people!

Who is most likely to cry on your wedding day? A: I’m going to say we both will. J: I`d like to say just Amy, but I’d say it’s a safe bet I’ll shed a few tears that day.

Who is most likely to be the last to leave the dance floor? A: It’s usually me and Jim – We love dancing J: Definitely me. I`m never one to leave someone dancing alone.

What’s your favorite trend for weddings right now? A: Cowboy boots ‘n mason jars!

What inspired your décor or theme? A: It just suits us and represents who we are. We both spent most of our pre-Alberta days in the country so why not have a down home country wedding. J: Both of us being from Iona definitely inspired the redneck theme of the day.

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why? J: The location. Both the church and the Highland Village itself are tied into our families. We both spent time at the Village when we were kids, special spot.

Any tips or advice for other couples planning their wedding? A: Don’t stress, have fun with it.

Jaci + Rob | Our Story

Tell us how you first met? Rob and I were introduced by a mutual friend in 2008. I was living in Dartmouth at the time and this friend had been trying to get us to meet for months without success, but finally I received a message through Facebook from Rob basically saying that he was told to get in touch with me and if he didn’t he was a fool. We started talking online and decided to meet in person that December. We had decided to make it a double date so it would be less awkward, but one half of the other couple cancelled at the last minute and it was just the 3 of us for the night! That was our first “date” and we have been together ever since.

Best Wedding Photographer Nova Scotia 048-

When did you know he/she was the one? I knew Rob was “the one” within days of talking to him. Since we didn’t live near one another we depended on nightly MSN chat “dates” to get to know each other. I knew right away that I wanted to be with him. I just recently told him that if he had of asked me to run away with him that first night we met in person I would have no questions asked. I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him and that I would.

Best Wedding Photographer Nova Scotia 051-

Tell us about the proposal. We had talked about marriage for a few years on and off, but more so after the birth of Maya. A few weeks before he “proposed” we had been out looking at rings so I knew it was coming, but not sure when. I think he had tried to plan some elaborate proposal but I kept screwing up his plans and we actually got in a fight about it. After a little time had passed we were sitting around the living room one Saturday discussing our plans for the day ie: errands, what to do with the baby etc and he came in with a receipt and told me one of the things we had to do was “pick this up” and he handed me the receipt for the ring. In true Rob fashion we ran EVERY errand we had to BUT getting the ring because he knew that would drive me crazy. We finally picked up the ring and there was no getting on bended knee. I don’t even remember if the words “Will you marry me” were even said. We just knew…well I knew I think he just went along with it LOL

Best Wedding Photographer Nova Scotia 076-Best Wedding Photographer Nova Scotia 074-

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. The one thing I love the most about Rob is the way he loves and cares for our daughter. He is a phenomenal father. I love those moments when he doesn’t know I’m watching and I see the look of pure love on his face when he looks at her. It makes my heart melt.

Tell us the one thing he/she does that always makes you laugh. There is not one thing that Rob specifically does to make me laugh. We laugh every day. Even when I’m trying to be mad at him he can make me laugh. That’s one of the reasons I fell in love with him.

Congratulations to Jessica & Jordi who were married seaside under blue skies at the beautiful Pictou Lodge Resort.

Jessica + Jordi | Our Story

Tell us how you first met?
Jessica: We met through mutual friends in second year University. Jordie had a little crush on me then but I didn’t give into him until the last year of school. We were pretty compatible from the first time we met and spent a few nights bonding over liquor, particularly whiskey. Jordie: We first met at an apartment in Halifax in 2010. We were both pretty drunk so I don’t think we really realized at the time we would eventually become each other’s happily ever after. Amazing what a little whiskey will accomplish. We kept talking back and forth over the next two years and became really good friends. Then one weekend I decided to take the chance and ask her up for the weekend in Halifax. We haven’t looked back ever since.

When did you know he/she was the one? Jessica: I thought of Jordie as a friend when we first met, although I always knew there was something special about him. I think when I finally realized I knew he was the one was when I allowed myself to look inwards and reflect on what I really wanted for my future. Jordie brought me stability and so much happiness I just knew I couldn’t live without him! Jordie: I knew she was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with almost right away, although there was one special night in March 2012. I invited her to come as my date to the Saint Mary’s Maroon & White Ball. That was the first night I told her I loved her. At first I thought she was going to jump out the window but once she calmed down a bit, I knew she felt the same way too.

Tell us about the proposal. Jessica: It was a perfect night out on the water on the Tall Ship Sylvia. Although I was expecting him to propose to me in the near future, I had no idea that he was planning on proposing to me that night. I kind of expected something was up because he kept taking me to the front of the boat but then people would come up so we would head back to the party. When he did propose I was so ecstatic I don’t even remember what I said, but apparently it was yes! Jordie: I proposed to her in June 2013 on the Tall Ship Silva on a country cruise in the Halifax Harbour. We had friends aboard but I made sure it was a surprise to everyone. I asked her to come to the front of the boat to look at the city all lit up at night. She said to me, “I don’t think this night could get any better…” and that’s when I said to her, “I bet it can…” She said yes lol.

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. Jessica: What you get is what you see with Jordie. He is funny, caring, intelligent, and everyone’s friend. He will always be there to support me and take care of me, and that is a comforting feeling. Jordie: I love the fact that she is and always will be my biggest supporter. She loves me for exactly who I am and has such a big heart. Truly an inspiration to be around 

Tell us the one thing he/she does that always makes you laugh. Jessica: Jordie has always been great at improvising lyrics to songs that are utterly ridiculous, but so funny. He also does great impersonations and has this funny voice he talks in that always makes me crack up. He has an amazing sense of humour. Jordie: When I’m having a bad day, she has become increasingly good at mimicking me, which is always full of humour, but only sometimes to me.

Where do you see yourselves in 20 years? Jessica: Settled with a career, a family, having done some traveling and just enjoying life. Jordie: I see us settled down with our family enjoying life to the fullest. Based on our personalities, I don’t think much will change aside from a few grey hair and some unwanted wrinkles.

Besides getting married –‐ what was your favourite memory for your wedding day?
Jessica: It was so special to be surrounded by friends and family. There was a moment on the dance floor where everyone was surrounding us, and of course there was a great Rankin tune on, and I remember looking around and feeling beyond blessed to have so many loved ones with us. Throughout the whole day I felt truly honoured to have those people in my life. Jordie: I would have to say getting ready and watching a tight little pair of pink underwear running across the front lawn to come join the rest of us. Always one in the group!

What inspired your décor or theme? Jessica: Our theme was vintage/rustic. We wanted everyone to feel welcome and not overwhelmed by the décor. We kept it somewhat simple but added a lot of personal detail. Jordie: My wife. I didn’t really have much of a hand in the theme other than being tasked with 1) going to pick it up and 2) carrying it.

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why? Jessica: I wore the earrings my mother wore for her wedding day, which was very special to me. We also incorporated a Celtic hand fasting ritual representing the coming together of two families. Jordie: I was happy to be able to share the day with my close family and friends from all over. Its difficult to get everyone together but it was nice to be able to share our special day with those who mean the most to us.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning? Any tips or advice for other couples planning their wedding. Jessica: One thing I wish we had done differently when planning was to make our RSVP cards clearer. My advice to other couples planning a wedding is to do what you want to do and not what others want or expect you to do. In the end, it is your wedding and you need to be happy. Everyone will be happy with the way things came together at the end of the day. Jordie: Make sure you put a date on when you would like to get things back. You will never ever get things back on time but at least the chasing for meal choices will be smaller in the closing weeks if you do.  My advice to people would be to make sure you make time for yourselves and soak up all parts of the day. It passes by so fast and the last thing you want is to miss out on the special details you worked so hard to bring together.

Krista + Jimmy | Our Story

Cape Breton Wedding Photographer Michelle Campbell007-

Tell us how you first met? While sitting in the waiting room, Jimmy saw a very cute, blue eyed girl working behind the counter but automatically thought, “Beautiful, but most likely already attached, and definitely … Too young”! He seated himself and waited to be called by the dentist. While waiting, another woman came out and recognized Jimmy right away. “You must be Doug Gillis’ son” she claimed, “you look just like him”! She then went on to say she was Jean and Roddie MacIntyre’s daughter, and a conversation was struck up. She then continued to introduce me to her cute , blue eyed daughter sitting behind the counter. “And this is my daughter Krista.” With baited breath he spoke to Krista, their eyes locked, and the words just seemed to come out naturally. He was then escorted in to see the dentist, and the next morning he was on a plane out west. I added Jimmy to Facebook after that day and he decided to accept my friend request and we started chatting from there, of course I was convinced he was either married or gay cause a man like Jimmy with personality and handsome good lucks are hard to find! :) Of course I was the one to make the first move even though Jimmy was dying too and I shut him down a few times! Hehe

Cape Breton Wedding Photographer Michelle Campbell001--2

When did you know he/she was the one?   When my Dad got sick, how he tried to take care of everything didn’t want me to worry or stress. His values and caring for his family, friends and complete strangers was amazing. His positive praise and reasoning as to why someone may have done what he did, he sees value in everyone. How we are completely ourselves with one another and family and friends. His passion and love he shows me every day, sweeps me off my feet!

Tell us about the proposal.  We had talked about our future together looked at a few rings however I wanted it to be a surprise and I did not want to chose a ring. I felt he knew me well enough and would find something that was perfect for us. I had no idea if and when it would happen but knew it would be the perfect time for us. The week of Christmas Jimmy was doing a lot of work in the basement taking his time wrapping presents. Little did I know he was back and forth to Port Hawkesbury to the florist. On Christmas day we open our gifts together before going to his parents for dinner and then on to my aunt an uncles, there was no ring so I figured later on down the road. After spending the day with family we went back to our house. Jimmy kept asking what time my parents were coming and I was like what the heck and why is he pacing. Next thing you knew once my parents arrived Jimmy asked my Dad to see him in the basement regarding some electrical work. Before I knew it, Jimmy was coming up with a wrapped box and said.” Oh ya I forgot one present”, me of course thinking what the heck said,” Oh I’ll wait until my family leaves.” My mom was like,” Open it! Let me see!” I opened the box inside were two dozen white and red roses and in the Center was a ring. On the lid it read “Krista, your my best friend, the girl of my dreams and the love of my life… Will you marry me? I don’t know who cried more me, him or my mom! :). He’s a romantic as you can tell!

Cape Breton Wedding Photographer Michelle Campbell006-

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.  It’s too hard to just name one, we love that we make each other laugh, cry, smile, make each other’s heart skip a beat. We tell each other we love each other everyday. We never go to bed mad, we forgive we forget. We treat our family with passion and respect. How wonderful and upstanding Jimmy is to me and his mom. The respect we have for one another, and always making sure we are ok. Loving each other unconditional even during difficult times.

Tell us the one thing he/she does that always makes you laugh.  There really is so many ways he makes me laugh from little things to big things, we find ourselves laughing so much our bellies hurt.

Where do you see yourselves in 20 years?  We see ourselves, God willing of course, with a family of our own, a nice home, lots of family around us and continuing to be more and more in love with one another, looking forward to growing old together.

Besides getting married –‐ what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day?  Sharing this amazing day with the man of my dreams, sharing this special day with lots of our family and friends and having pictures and memories to reflect back on.

Cape Breton Wedding Photographer Michelle Campbell002-

Who is most likely to cry on your wedding day?  Both of us of course without a doubt but I think Jimmy will cry first! Of course followed by my Mom and Jimmy’s Mom

Who is most likely to be the last to leave the dance floor?  Out of the two of us, me of course however Jimmy will try and keep up. As for family my brother Brian! Lol

What’s your favorite trend for weddings right now?  We love rustic, simple, scenic, old barns and nature, flowers etc.

Cape Breton Wedding Photographer Michelle Campbell005-

What inspired your décor or theme?  Less is more and I always enjoyed making and doing things for family as well as Jimmy, we love taking pictures of sunsets and old barns and trails. We enjoy the simple and small things in life which makes up big things.

Are there any special details for your wedding day that are sentimental and if so why?  There will be a candle lit at the altar for family and friends we have lost – for Jimmy’s grandparents and my grandparents, family lost in tragic accidents including my first cousins and uncle. In memory of the ones lost. The church itself is where I grew up and where all my Dad’s family is buried. My favors will be homemade jam and honey, my Gramma taught me to make jam so that is part of her. The big red barn is where I grew up and played as a child. Judique is where both Jimmy and my mom grew up and both have a huge attachment to the community. My Nana and Grumpy for being able to be with us for our special day. My dog Marley is my baby girl and hopefully she will get in some pictures with Pretty our horse.  Dancing shoes “flip flops” for family and friends to relieve their sore toes from dancing. A special unexpected dance with my Dad. The list goes on – I know people say,” Don’t worry about the small stuff,” but that’s what means the most to us.  Last but not least, we’re so happy to have our parents share this special day with us.

Cape Breton Wedding Photographer Michelle Campbell008-

What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning? It would have been nice to have saved and budgeted earlier, but with a wedding you never know. Photography is one of the most important things for a couple on their wedding day, as photos keep those memories alive for many years and generations to come. That’s one place I refused to skimp on! :)
